Meeting with Mason City Council
Along with other community leaders, members of our team led the charge in mobilizing community action around the third HB1 hearing on May 20, 2025. We coordinated testimony efforts, resulting in over 68 written submissions and more than 20 people testifying in person. The significant presence caught the attention of Chair Abrams of the House Public Safety Committee, who appeared visibly surprised by the strong turnout.
Just three days later, when the Senate announced a fourth SB88 hearing for May 27, we sprang into action. Despite the short notice, we mobilized approximately 300 people to attend in person and helped encourage community members to submit nearly 300 written testimonies in opposition. We also organized a subsequent press conference that drew significant media attention and further amplified our message.
Wess Miller, an experience advocate from the fight against Texas’s SB17, coordinated legislative meetings with House and Senate committee members. For each meeting, we assembled and prepared small teams of volunteers to deliver talking points and engage lawmakers in strategic dialogue.
We met with nearly all 19 committee members. These conversations have been critical to understanding legislators' positions, building meaningful relationships, and gathering strategic insights. For example, in our meetings with Chair Abrams, we uncovered the reasons behind two canceled hearings and gained clarity on her stance regarding HB1 amendments. We've since submitted our proposed amendments directly to both Chair Abrams and Chair Rogner.
